Conversation #1

In a perfect world, people would listen more.  Rational conversations would lead to an open flow of ideas that ultimately would lead to a better place to live.

But it's not a perfect world.  Most of us are self-absorbed and can't wait for our chance to speak and we look straight at a person while they're talking but we're really just thinking about what we're going to contribute to the dialogue only it's not a dialogue if you're reciting an internal monologue to yourself and you don't actually process what's being said so you selfishly close yourself off to different opinions and ideas and it all just swirls around in your brain, never to be retained, ultimately a shame.

Well, I'm going to try and contribute to that perfect world and start a conversation with whoever is reading this blog.

Here's how it's going to work.  I'll ask a question at the end of this blog, and then post my answer as the 1st comment.  Then, you can post a comment with your answer.  It's my blog, so I understand that the onus lies squarely on my shoulders to provide the content, but I am curious to see what things are running around inside your head, too.

Okay... ummm... errrrrrr... hmmmm... let's see...

Here's an easy one (I hope...):

What's the first album you ever purchased?  And when did you purchase it?

  1. I'm pretty sure the first album I purchased was Offspring's Smash. It was a cassette tape, and I was in 7th or 8th grade (which means that I was a full year or two late to the party). I didn't even listen to the whole cassette. I would just fast forward to "Bad Habit" and "Come Out and Play". To this day, if "Bad Habit" comes on the radio, I just wanna yell along to it. Ah, the exuberance of youth...

  2. The first album I bought as Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise. I think it explains a lot. I remember I was shocked at the liberal sprinkling of vulgarities throughout the CD. What a great buy.

  3. It's funny, If I really really think about it I was given money by my parents to buy my first CD when I was abut 8 or 9, I believe, and that was around 1993, so as you can imagine the music scene was not too amazing. Mary J Blige, Whitney, Ace of Base, Janet Jackson, SWV, Dr Dre and En Vouge were WAY WAY WAY popular. So I probably bought something along those lines. Or a Disney movie soundtrack, possibly Aladdin.
But I think I bought my first, "I am so excited to buy a CD/album" moment was the Empire Records Soundtrack, which was 1995. Along with the Clueless soundtrack and probably along with that The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and/or The Cranberries as well as Save Ferris.
Wow, happiness and good times back then.

I've got a question, can you remember the last time you actually went to a record store and bought some vinyl or a cd?! Crazy right.

  4. Hmmm... last vinyl I purchased was last June from the used bin at Rhino Records: Elton John's Honky Chateau. Like most of my vinyls, it's been un-spinned in a bin ever since. I really do need to dust off that 1978 Fisher Price record player...

Last CD...? Wow... Ummmm... I can't even remember the last CD I purchased. I think it was Tegan and Sara's Sainthood the day it came out last October. Pretty sure that's what it was. From the Borders on Barranca and Jamboree in Irvine.

Oh, physical albums... how long till you've gone the way of the dodo?

  6. Okay this is really going to date me! 1961 and it wasn't an album, it was a 45! Do you even know what a 45 is? Anyway it was Blue Moon by The Marcels and I loved that song. It cost me $.05 at a store called The White Front. I also bought The Lion Sleeps Tonight, but I can't remember if it was at the same time. I spent a good deal of my meager allowance on 45's. 1st album was Peter, Paul and Mary 1962. I played that to death too. 1964 Meet the Beatles! Wow
