Life Happens

There's no escaping it.

Where once ideal circumstances existed...

... now exist challenges and responsibilities.

Make the time to play guitar. To write. To be creative.

But not at the expense of the things that are your ultimate priority.

Family first always.

Especially when taken out by the norovirus.

Disinfect every surface, people.

Or suffer the consequences.......

And then... you feel guilty

For not keeping your promise.

For failing to pickup your guitar.

For putting other things, less important things, ahead of the things you want to accomplish.

Not everything can be pushed aside, but not everything should pull focus either.

Go play guitar and write a mini song and get back on a creative crawl.

You'll feel better for it.

This was a lot easier when I was in my 20s

I had all the time in the world.

Except... I didn't.

And now I purposely carve out time to work on music and writing and practicing guitar and singing.

Which someone is more meaningful because it's intentional.

Rather than just filling the time aimlessly.

At least that's what I tell myself...

Force Yourself to Do It

When you don't feel like writing...

When you're uninspired...

When everything feels wrong...

Force yourself to write something...

A formulated idea. Something from nothing.

It beats doom scrolling for another 30 minutes...

Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't

So you might as well do.

Action is better than inaction.

Speaking in platitudes is... lazy? Unoriginal? A sign of being told what to think as opposed to thinking for yourself?

An original thought... can you come up with one?

So much has been thought of and forgotten by humanity already.

Writing and erasing and editing is a waste of time.

Your thoughts can end up being wrong.

That's okay.

You have permission to fail. As long as you learn from the failure.

5 Music Things That Make Me Happy At The Moment

Reading Our Band Could Be Your Life.

Having picked up a guitar everyday so far this year.

Hearing Chase play along to Metallica in his room.

Calloused fingertips.

Knowing I will be playing and writing later tonight.

Fun is the Point

Fun in the point.

Not followers or likes or listeners or eyes and ears on your creations.

Those things can enhance the fun. But they're not the sole provider of the fun.

The fun comes from creating something from nothing.

The fun comes from taking what's in your head and bringing it into the real world.

Writing and playing chords that fit with sung words that tell a story and convey an emotion.

THAT's the fun.

And fun is the point.

Don't get it twisted.

Plays Poorly With Others and Musings on Turning Ideas into Reality

This time I'll get it right.

I know exactly what I need to do.

---

About 45 voice memo ideas going back to the beginning of December.

It's time to sift through and look for diamonds in the rough. And then sit with the ideas that have potential and tend to them and water them and watch them grow.

Wait... are they diamonds or crops? Mixing metaphors is potentially confusing.

It Comes from SOMEwhere

Writing is an anomaly.

One minute there's nothing. The next there's SOMEthing.

Out of thin air. Not necessarily completely original. But most definitely built with some parts that are singularly unique.

And when it's done well, it can change lives.

Stop thinking so much and let it happen.

Writing: SOP

Get everything out of your head.

Riffs, licks, chords, melodies, bits of lyrics if they happen in the moment.

Record them in some sort of voice memo app on your phone. I literally use Voice Memo on my iPhone.

Title them whatever feels right. This will change. Often. Make sure you include the word "idea" at the end so you can search and find all the ideas.

Let them sit. Listen to these ideas a couple times a week and if anything sticks out, give it some deep work time.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

What is the goal?

Writing more music?

Recording more songs?

Releasing an album?

Reaching more people?

Having fun?

Becoming a better musician?

Telling good stories?

Making money?

Playing live shows?

Connecting with people?

...

Keeping the promise to yourself?

Songs I'd Like to Write

A song that's one chord the entire time.
A song that starts with the chorus.
A song where every verse, chorus, bridge, etc. is based on a completely new musical motif but it all still fits.
A song that starts with only bass.
A song that starts with only drums.
A song that starts with a harmonized riff on bass and guitar.
A song that's just acoustic guitar and vocals.
A song that's full band instrumental.
A song that's traditional intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-outro.
A song where the first chorus is a half version of the actual chorus.

Even better if I can have all of these songs on a 10 song album.

Things I Need to Work On: Guitar Edition

Finger endurance, strength, and flexibility.

Learning more covers.

Writing (documenting) more, but also not forcing it. Just turn on the faucet and catch the water, adult.

Chord transitions but also the transitions within the transitions. Sometimes the fingering doesn't need to be fully formed at the beginning of the phrase. There are micro adjustments and movements and placements that exist among each transition. Figure out these moments and fit them in to the musicality of the phrasing. Yes, there is a script. But there's also room for tone, inflection, dynamics, nuance. The what should be enhanced by the how.

Pick up a guitar everyday, even if it's only for 120 seconds.

Have fun. If it's not fun, put it down after the prescribed 120 seconds.

I Should Go to Sleep

But I'd rather post about more recording ideas...

Record drums in the house I grew up in.

2 and a half minutes or less for each song.

Power trio format.

3 part harmony vocals if it fits the song.

Travel topics: airports, restaurants, hotels, destinations, cruising, business trips, anniversary trips, travel with kids, boarding the dogs, renting cars, TSA pre-check, packing.

I... may or may not disregard the album theme limitation...

I am not that person...

... the one who can't watch themselves on video.

... the one who hears the finished song in their head before it's done.

... the one who practices a lot.

... the one who maintains their instrument.

... the one who writes lyrics before the music/melody.

... the one who actually finishes most of the projects he starts.

Some of these are innocuous.

Others need to be changed ASAP.

Self-awareness is a good thing if it leads to action.

For Me

Yes. I want an audience.

Yes. I want the music I make to be liked by a ton of people.

Yes. I want to reach as many people as possible.

But it starts with doing it for me.

If I don't spend time making (finishing) it, I'll never have an audience.

Doing it for me means keeping my promise to myself and finishing it.

Write the song. Record the song. Mix the song. Release the song.

That's the promise.

Keep it.

THEN I can worry about getting an audience.

Memory Lane: Weezer- In the Garage

It's about re-creating a feeling. Capturing a moment in a life, any life, mine, yours, theirs, ours.

Because we all have the same experiences, the same hopes and dreams and fears. Everyone just wants to be happy, to find something that makes them get up in the morning.

There are songs that do this so well...

I remember sitting in the back of my parent's 1995 Honda Civic with my sister's Sony Discman in my lap, headphones blaring, on the way to San Diego for a reunion for my dad and his fraternity brothers, or on the way home from school on the 60 freeway passing Montebello golf course, or on the way to Griffith Park Observatory during Christmas 1996 with some cousins from the Philippines...

So many memories just from listening to one song...

Work at it, Glynn. Write ten songs. Then a hundred. Then a thousand. And make each one capture a moment in a life. Yours. His. Hers. Theirs. Ours.

Write. Go play guitar right now. It's not as if you're actually going to go to sleep...

Write About What's Important

About staying up until 1 in the morning playing guitar.

About trying to comfort your son after he's hit the back of his head and there's a huge bump and he doesn't want to keep the bag of frozen vegetables on the bump because it hurts and there are tears streaming down his face and chewed up bits of peanut butter and jelly sandwich oozing out of his mouth and he still has the wherewithal to laugh at Lightning McQueen.

About how much you love watching your wife while she's sleeping...

About how your tiny cat can take up what feels like the entire queen mattress.

About how the big swedish fish are better than the smaller ones.

About how there are people in the world that argue for the sake of arguing, people who take pride in cutting down others, people who feed off of negative energy and can't wait to nay-say and criticize and poke holes in everything you hold dear.

About how there are people that are nothing like that.

About how when your son was born it made you realize how much your parents love you. And it made you feel sad, guilty, humbled, loved, happy, proud, amazing all at the same time.

About how you hope your typing won't wake her up...

It did...

Damn...

Good night.
